  • portfolio: unite with us

As Systems and Web Officer for one of the biggest trades unions in the country - Unite - I worked on many projects, including this membership services project: 'unite with us'. From formulating the name and logo, I created this site which has been running a number of years and allows members a portal to membership services offered by third parties.

The site was designed in Photoshop and Fireworks and then built using PHP5, with the database holding the content in MySQL. An adaptation of my personal content management system was used to supply the users with a method of adding content such as the text, images, adverts and flash modules.

My employment with Unite came about following many union mergers. Initially I was with Unifi - a trade union for the banking industry - where I designed, built and maintained their website using ASP and VBScript.

As always keeping out of the politics, I have now been able to take on a number of other sites including this one from local Sussex MP and Children's Minister  Tim Loughton. This site has the full range of rich content featues from the new AXC content management system I have developed over the years.

The system allows news items to be added; past and future events such as MP Surgeries and other rich content. A Jquery slideshowis utilised and parts of the design are revealed at random - ie the top panel above the menu shows different images from around the constituency. Staff are able to upload pdf files of newsletters and video podcasts.

During 2011 I have built and installed a new political site for local young activists whilst I am working on other linked websites.

  • portfolio: Reps Kit

This was a union project in which I played a major development role in creating the functionality of this system designed to assist union reps in the workplace using forms, surveys and custom pdf generation of newsletters, welcome letters, posters and leaflets from standard templates. Shown here is the (less attractive but functional) webpage for the user notes which had to be read carefully since this was quite a complicated project!

There were 5 levels of user functionality ranging from just viewing the protected areas of the site, through the ability to upload content, with higher levels being able to design their own forms and use pre-prepared artwork templates to create the content for newsletters and leaflets. The highest level of access allowed people to compile reports detailing the users' use of the systems, allowing checks to be made that the content input and questions asked in the questionnaires and forms were "on-message". I carried out the systems analysis, coded all the system logic in PHP and designed the database.

  • portfolio: FairPensions

One of the projects I was deployed on whilst at Unite was to work with a London-based charitable foundation - FairPensions - during the setup and creation of their website.  This was built using ASP and later converted to the PHP5 MySQL combination with bespoke content management system.

  • portfolio: Africa Matters

I helped to set up this union-sponsored site, providing the minimalist design, a forum,  the code and content management system. The aim was to provide an on-line learning tool regarding African issues. I was well-placed to help with this project having been selected from a Europe-wide forum of web developers meeting in Switzerland to go to Ghana in West Africa for a number of weeks to work with staff in setting up their own websites.

  • portfolio: HHC Supporters

HHC Supporters - an action group dedicated to enuring that the Hengistbury Head Centre remained open after concerns that the local Bournemouth council were to close it. The action group needed a website to focus their campaign and I was asked to help. Featuring news items, reports and the ability to sign up to the cause, the site was built using classic ASP and, again, had its own CMS.

This site also made good use of a slideshow on the opening page showcasing the unique attractions of learning to sail at the centre and the other waterborne activities available.

  • portfolio: Strange New Worlds

I have had a large involvement with "Strange New Worlds" - a now annual science fiction festival started in Worthing in July 2010. I designed the flyers, shown here, which involved my own cartoon comic drawing, typesetting and photography all composited with Photoshop.  The event featured costumes, sets, props and comic creating workshops. There was a make-table for children to create monsters from scrap materials as well as competitions and trades stands. Judged a success, having nearly 2000 attendees, the event expanded to a 2-day festival this year.

I set up the original launch website for this event to work in harmony with the flyer's design and have continued to provide resources for this community project.

  • Current Projects

I am currently working on a number of projects - the conversion and redesign/refurbishment of a local Playgroup site, as well as a similar conversion of a Sussex-wide schools-based Eco-Awareness website.

This latter project is intended to grow and hopefully become a nationwide presence once it has been trialled within Sussex. I am converting this site into my CMS and evolving the site to be easily used by an ever-changing group of users from different schools.

I am  also completing a major project to redesign an accounting and administration system for a nationwide animal charity based in Sussex. This has been done using PHP and MySQL using OOP principles wherever possible.

  • portfolio: Devious

As an outlet for my sci-fi interests I have been involved with "Devious", an amateur film-making group, for a number of years. The Dr Who-based work now features on an official BBC DVD and my sets and props have featured on TV on a number of occasions, including at Pinewood Studios. The project has grown from strength to strength and an effective website was something needed from the outset.

The website for Devious has always been a testbed for my systems. Initially built in ASP, it has also transformed into PHP/MySQL and also sports the new AXC system and has been used to test systems.

I have also just launched dalekworld.org (February 2011) which is a  free-hosted site documenting an educational schools project I am involved with.
